Phase 3
Although Phase 3 will most likely be implemented at least five years later than Phase 1, these trail extensions are still important to completing the overall goals of the planned trail network. These fifteen additional trail miles (thirteen off-road) are not described in segment-by-segment detail, but the general routes are described below.
Additional Trail Extensions (Maps 39 – 42)
- A spur from Gypsy Hill Park across Churchville Avenue through neighborhoods to Dixon Elementary, residential areas east of Shutterlee Mill Road, and eventually to Woodrow Wilson Parkway (which will route users of the growing regional bike network into and around Staunton) (Map 39)
- A spur from the northern entrance of Gypsy Hill Park to Ware Elementary and Shelburne Middle, eventually connecting to the Buttermilk Spring Road Phase 2 trail (Map 39)
- A loop connecting Montgomery Hall Park, Garber Manor, a southern section of Lewis Creek, Greenspring Valley, Bessie Weller Elementary, and the Nelson Street Teen Center (Map 40)
- A spur from the Coalter/Augusta intersection across Commerce Road and along two miles of Bells Lane eventually connecting to Woodrow Wilson Parkway (which will route users of the growing regional bike network into and around Staunton) (Map 41)
- A loop/spur from the proposed New Hope Road trail parking lot to Lewis Creek, along the future Northeast Connector, and along New Hope Road east to the city’s border near Winbrook (Map 41)
- A wildflower loop trail between the Frontier Culture Museum and the
proposed Shenandoah Valley Crossroads Travel Information Center (Map
42)
