Stormwater
Like most Virginia cities, Staunton faces growing issues in the control of stormwater runoff. Growth means more roofs, more driveways and roads, and more parking lots. Runoff from such impervious areas can be very rapid and damaging, and can damage area streams and rivers.
To protect the environment and to meet state law, Staunton faces substantial costs for new stormwater facilities, and the higher costs of maintaining facilities and making sure that all new construction meets state standards. To respond to those needs, the Staunton city staff has adopted a stormwater program that includes a new, enhanced stormwater utility fee that will equitably distribute costs without burdening taxpayers.
The goals of the new program are to:
- Provide protection to homeowners and private business properties,
- Provide funding to maintain and repair existing stormwater infrastructure,
- Minimize flooding potential and damages,
- Create a self-funding program, and to
- Implement projects to improve water quality within the Chesapeake Bay Watershed.
Revisions Adopted by City Council Thursday, May 27 2010
- All undeveloped parcels (with no impervious surface on such parcels) are exempt from Stormwater Utility Fees
- Any two contiguous lots over which a single family residential
structure is erected shall be deemed one property and only one
