Planning & Inspections

Planning
Staff assists Staunton's City Council, Planning
Commission, and citizens in developing and implementing policy
reflecting the goals and priorities in Staunton's Comprehensive
Plan vision for the future planning and land use policy in the
city. In addition, planning staff serves as liaison for the
Historic Preservation Commission.
Staunton's Building Official, Floodplain Administrator, and
Inspections Staff are responsible for the
regulation of all building and property maintenance in the City,
including administration of the Uniform Statewide Building Code and
serving as staff for the Building Board Code of Appeals. Building
permits, plumbing, electrical and mechanical permits, as well as
other permits and applications, are available at the
department; forms are
available for down load. Building application and permit
fees are based on the overall square footage the project; a
schedule of fees includes specific information about the
costs of the permitting process. Informational
brochures describing recommended configurations for accessible
restrooms in addition to others are available as
well.
Zoning Administrator and Zoning Staff work together to ensure the compliance and enforcement of the Staunton City Code, while coordinating proposed amendments to the Code with the public, Staunton's City Attorney, and many other departments within the City's government. In addition, zoning staff serves as liaison to the Board of Zoning Appeals. The regulation of Home Occupations, Signs, and Fences are examples of issues addressed by zoning staff.
Our Permit Technician and Administration Staff process all site plan submittals, acting as the point of distribution and point of contact for the site development review process.
In addition, Staunton's Planning, Inspections, and Zoning staff coordinate assistance with the development of land use and zoning policy, including evaluating and processing applications for land use re-zonings, special use permits, zoning code amendments, and zoning code variances.
