An Information Guide For Crime Victims and Witnesses
The Victim/Witness Program, located in the Office of the Commonwealth's Attorney, 21 N. New Street, was implemented for the benefit of victims and witnesses of crime. Our program's goal is to reduce any confusion and trauma by explaining the criminal process and providing the services you are entitled to as victims and witnesses of crimes.
The Virginia VINELink homepage offers an on-line resource that
allows you to search for information regarding current custody status
of inmates serving sentences in Virginia local and regional jails and
the Virginia Department of Corrections.
Local and regional jails will provide automated notification when an
offender is released, transferred, or escapes. Virginia
Department of Corrections will provide automated notification when a
State sentenced offender is released, transferred, escapes, dies, or
has a parole based event.
Criminal Injuries Compensation Fund
Being the victim of crime can be an overwhelming and difficult experience. The Criminal Injuries Compensation Fund (CICF) may be able to provide relief in the form of reimbursement for medical expenses, lost wages, funeral expenses, relocation, counseling costs and other “necessary and reasonable” expenditures that you have incurred.

New Directions Center, Inc (Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault)
New Directions Center, Inc. a United Way agency, is a non-profit community organization which provides crisis intervention, emergency housing, food, clothing and transportation to women, children and men impacted by emotional, physical and sexual violence in the Staunton, Waynesboro, Augusta County and Highland County areas.
MADD (Mothers
against Drunk Driving) provides information and
networking for victims and family members. The site includes
brochures and articles covering grief and healing, talking to children
and teens about death, coping with serious injury, the criminal and
civil court system, and other topics of interest.
Identity Theft
The International Association of Chiefs of Police and Bank of America announced a partnership to help consumers and law enforcement officials understand and respond to identity crime.
A nationwide strategy, released in 2008, aims to further raise citizen awareness of identity crimes and the steps to prevent being victimized, as well as bolstering law enforcement's expertise in conducting investigations.

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, (NCMEC), is a private, nonprofit organization created to serve as the nation’s resource on the issues of missing and sexually exploited children. The organization provides information and resources to law enforcement, parents, children including child victims as well as other professionals.
