Paving

Paving is an expensive undertaking, and one of the most misunderstood.  Of the City's 275 lane miles of streets, 72 miles have not been paved since at least 1964 - or about 25%.  The cost to pave one lane for one mile is $86,000.  Due to financial constraints, the City has averaged paving only about 6.6 miles per year.

Paving is based on a priority list.  Top priority has to be given to main arterial roadways first, then collector roads, connectors and subdivisions.  Repaving is based on that classification with consideration for the volume of traffic carried, the load or weight of vehicles and the overall condition of the existing pavement.
