Get Your Taxes Prepared for Free

FEBRUARY 1, 2019 — If your household income is $56,000 or less, you may be eligible to receive free tax preparation assistance to file your federal and state income tax returns.

The Valley Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) is offering free tax prep assistance at three locations in the Valley Feb. 5 through April 12.

IRS-certified volunteers will be available at Booker T. Washington Community Center in Staunton, Stuarts Draft High School and the United Way of Greater Augusta in Fishersville to prepare returns. Although walk-ins are accepted, the group encourages participants to make an appointment by calling 540.466.8448 or scheduling an appointment online.

VITA receives funding through a grant from the IRS, the Virginia CASH Campaign and CAPSAW.

The deadline for filing a 2018 federal income tax return is April 15. State income tax returns should be filed by May 1. The IRS recommends filing taxes online as well as signing up for direct deposit to get tax refunds faster.

Call for Volunteers

VITA is in need of volunteers to help as greeters in both the Stuarts Draft and Staunton locations. Those interested in volunteering should message them on Facebook or call 540.466.8448.
