Community Foundation Seeks Citizen Input
During Phase 2 of the Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge’s relief efforts, the foundation is seeking direct input from residents in the community. The foundation has prepared a brief survey to collect additional information about what citizens may be struggling with as a result of lost income, social distancing requirements, their health risks, social inequities and biases, and any barriers to accessing resources. There are four ways to participate and all responses will be kept confidential:

Golf Course to Open Saturday
As announced late last week, the City of Staunton is planning to reopen the Gypsy Hill Golf Course on Saturday, May 23, 2020, assuming that public health guidelines allow for resumption of operations at that point in time.  Specific social distancing guidelines and safety protocols have been finalized by the city’s Parks and Recreation Department and are provided below and are posted on the Staunton website and social media platforms.  

“We are eager for golfers to get back to play on the Gypsy Hill course and look forward to our patrons’ continued cooperation in respecting social distancing and other public health guidelines,” said Parks and Recreation Director Chris Tuttle.

COURSE GUIDELINES:

  • Maintain at least 6-foot distancing at all times
  • Tee times assigned by the pro shop at 10-minute intervals
  • Credit card payment only
  • One customer at a time in the pro shop
  • Handle your own equipment at all times
  • One person per cart, unless golfing with a family member
  • Clubhouse closed - golfers encouraged to use restroom facility at Hole 9
  • Bring from home and frequently use anti-bacterial wipes and hand sanitizer before, during and after play
  • No ball washers or water coolers are available
  • No congregating or gathering on the course
  • Proceed to your car and depart immediately after play

Reminders Before You Go to the Polls
Just a few reminders before going to the polls tomorrow, May 19, 2020 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. For those residents who vote in Ward 2, please note the polling location has temporarily moved from Christ United Methodist Church to the Gypsy Hill Park Gym.

For those who are voting absentee, you have until 7 p.m., May 19, 2020 to get your ballot returned. Drop it in the City of Staunton drop box on Central Avenue (almost at the corner of Central Avenue and Beverley Street). The Board of Elections will be checking the box every hour.

Police Chief Appointed Chair of Criminal Justice Services Board
Chief of Police Jim Williams was recently appointed as chair of the Criminal Justice Services Board by Governor Northam. Chief Williams’ term begins July 1, 2020 for two years.
