City Celebrates 30th Tree City USA Recognition During Program’s Milestone 50th Anniversary Season

April 24, 2026 — The Arbor Day Foundation has named the City of Staunton a 2026 Tree City USA, marking the 30th consecutive year of commitment to planting, growing, and maintaining its urban tree canopy. This year’s designation is especially significant as the Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree City USA program celebrates its 50th recognition season.

Tree City USA 2026To maintain this status, Staunton continues to meet four core standards:

  • Maintaining a tree board or department
  • Upholding a community tree ordinance
  • Spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry
  • Participating in an Arbor Day celebration

“Trees are critical infrastructure, building resiliency and fostering good health in our nation’s cities,” said Michelle Saulnier, Vice President of Programs at the Arbor Day Foundation. “For five decades, Tree City USA has rallied passionate local leaders to enhance the livability and sustainability of their communities. Tree champions like Staunton are leading the way in a growing movement to shape a better future through action.”

In urban environments, a healthy tree canopy provides measurable benefits beyond aesthetics. Trees help mitigate the urban heat island effect, reduce stormwater runoff, improve air quality, and increase property values. When strategically planted, they also reduce traffic noise and lower energy costs for homeowners.

Arbor Day Proclamation

During the regular meeting on Thursday, April 23, City Council presented an official proclamation recognizing Arbor Day to City Horticulturist Matt Sensabaugh.

“Each tree we plant or preserve contributes to a healthier environment and stronger community. We’re proud to continue this legacy and shape a greener future for Staunton,” said Sensabaugh.
