Weather Update: Gypsy Hill Park Pool House Celebration rescheduled for Friday, May 29

Update: May 22, 2026 – Staunton is ready to dive into the 2026 swim season with the brand new Gypsy Hill Park Pool House, but the chilly and rainy weekend forecast has forced a few schedule adjustments!

While the weather has slid our official opening day back by just one day to Sunday, May 24, the formal ribbon-cutting ceremony has been rescheduled for Friday, May 29 at 10 a.m.

The Friday ceremony will be held near the pool entrance, featuring remarks from city leadership and Parks and Recreation Director Chris Tuttle. Following the ribbon-cutting, the city will host a free public open house tour from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., allowing community members to explore the new building.

After a brief operational reset at 11:30 a.m., the pool will officially open for regular public swimming at 12 p.m.

The new single-story facility replaces the original 1958 pool house, which had reached the end of its functional life due to structural issues and deteriorating infrastructure. This project represents a transformative shift for the community, prioritizing modern accessibility and family comfort.

Key features of the new facility include:

  • Zero-Barrier Access: Completely accessible design at ground level, replacing old stairs and long ramps with a direct walkway to the pool deck.
  • Privacy for Families: New individual, unisex restrooms and changing areas designed to accommodate everyone.
  • Improved Amenities: A modernized concession stand and a new covered patio area.
  • Community Comfort: Installation of new, durable metal benches and picnic tables for better seating options.

“This project is a major win for our residents, moving us from the original 1950s facility to one that respects the needs of today’s families and guests,” said Chris Tuttle. “We are incredibly grateful to our partners at Lantz Construction Company for their hard work and collaboration in bringing this project to life on schedule. My staff has been working tirelessly to prepare for this season, and we can’t wait to welcome everyone back.”

Extended 2026 Season
In addition to the new facility, the city is pleased to announce an extended pool season for 2026. While the pool has historically closed in early August, the current budget allows for limited operations to continue through Labor Day, contingent upon lifeguard staffing.
