Home MenuThe Staunton Police Department (SPD) is an internationally accredited, full-service law enforcement agency dedicated to serving the citizens of the City of Staunton.
The department operates the City's state-of-the-art Enhanced-911 Center, which serves as the primary answering point for the City's 911 calls and dispatches calls for service for police, fire and the Staunton-Augusta Rescue Squad.
The SPD also sponsors a number of crime prevention initiatives, including Virginia Rules, mentorship, and School Resource Officer programs for the area's youth; a Citizen's Police Academy; and Neighborhood and Business Watch programs.

This is a perfect opportunity to join an outstanding team and take part in a rewarding career. Dispatchers receive emergency and non-emergency calls from the public and public safety personnel by radio and telephone, dispatch police, fire, and EMS in response to the identified need and accurately document all related incidents. Position requires the dispatcher to become certified in emergency medical dispatch (EMD) for calls involving critical illness or injury, the ability to work in stressful situations, prioritize tasks, make decisions quickly and have strict attention to detail. A HS diploma/GED, and excellent organizational, keyboarding, computing, customer service skills, the ability to adapt to change and the ability to work in a team environment required. Must be able to work a 12-hour shift: 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on a rotating basis, including weekends and holidays. Hiring range: $31,095-$36,050 (salary commensurate with experience). Hiring process requires successful completion of a City of Staunton employment application, written test(s), interview(s) and background investigation, including a past free from felony conviction and crime(s) involving moral turpitude. The hiring process can take approximately four to six weeks and requires successful completion of employment application, written test, interview, background investigation, and pre-employment drug-screen. IMPORTANT: •Individuals who tested and/or were interviewed in 2018 are NOT eligible to apply. •“Virginia Certified Dispatchers” do NOT have to test but must submit an online application. •As part of the application process, all non-“Virginia Certified Dispatcher” applicants must take a written test administered by the Staunton Police Department. UPDATE: Cale has been arrested. The Staunton Police Department is attempting to locate Matthew Alan Cale. He is currently wanted on three grand larceny charges and attempted to steal a vehicle that was left running in the downtown area this morning. Cale was last seen on foot in the area of S. Coalter St and Kalorama St wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, and black tennis shoes. He has a short beard and multiple neck tattoos. If you see this individual or know of his wherabouts please contact the Staunton Police Department.
