The City of Staunton engaged Messer Contracting, LLC to undertake a 20-month, $1.9M streetscape project that will renovate and invigorate a three-block section of North Central Avenue between West Frederick and Pump Streets.  This project will extend the historic character of downtown Staunton, adding the final segment of an unbroken trail of brick sidewalks from Gypsy Hill Place all the way to the Wharf.  The project will also install historic-style streetlights, relocate utilities underground, and repave the roadway.  The majority of funding for this project — more than 85% — is being provided by federal and state transportation funds.

Construction began in November of 2020, and project status, schedule updates and other information will be available here.

Central Ave Ribbon Cutting Invitation: April 1, 10 a.m. at the intersection of Central and Frederick

03.23.2022

The Central Avenue Streetscape Improvements Project is COMPLETE.

The City will be holding a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of this $1.9 million project, which will be held on Friday, April 1 at 10 a.m. at the intersection of Central and Frederick. The public is invited to attend.

Timeline

November 30, 2020 through June 30, 2022

Once construction is underway, the portion of Central Avenue between Pump Street and West Frederick Street will be reduced to one lane, with the One Way traffic limited to southbound only.  This temporary traffic configuration will remain throughout the project, with construction traffic signs placed accordingly throughout the area.  Access to all properties will be maintained at all times.

The project work is anticipated to begin at the corner of Pump Street and work its way south along the east side of Central Avenue, eventually reaching West Frederick Street.  From there, the work will progress up the west side of Central Avenue back up to Pump Street.  This way, the construction zone will be confined to a limited area at a time and still allow traffic to flow through, with the intent to minimize disturbance to adjacent properties.  Asphalt paving of the entire street will occur at the very end of the project.

Improvements

  • Installation of approximately 3,000 linear feet of brick sidewalk
