The City of Staunton is improving the way trash is collected:
Our modernized trash collection system is now in operation! With $890,000 in American Rescue Plan Act funds (ARPA) allocated by Staunton City Council, the city has successfully implemented standardized trash collection for residential customers outside of the Central Business District.
This transitions our collection method into a safer, more efficient, and more environmentally conscious system.
Each household has now received their city-owned trash bin (95-gallon or 45-gallon). Our trash trucks have been retrofitted with mechanical tippers and we're using new route optimization software to improve service efficiency.
As the city completes final bin delivery corrections and customer-requested bin size exchanges in the coming weeks, Public Works expects there to be a period of adjustment for customers and refuse crews.
The city has updated its solid waste policies, which will be in alignment with the new collection system. Residents whose trash is not set out correctly will receive a hangtag with tips for correction and notice of the violation.
Monthly yard waste pickup will begin late this spring and updates to trash collection in the Central Business District will be considered as a third phase of trash modernization.
We are excited for these upgrades and appreciate your cooperation as we move to this more sustainable way of collecting trash.
These changes do not impact recycling — which is still located at the Public Works Compound, 1911 Craigmont Rd.
