An Election Officer (also known as Officers of Election or Poll Workers) assists voters and ensures that policies and procedures concerning the conduct of elections are followed at each of Staunton's five voting precincts. 

The Staunton Electoral Board is responsible for conducting elections in Staunton and works with Election Officers, the General Registrar, and Virginia electoral agencies to do so.

Qualifications

To become an Election Officer in the City of Staunton, you must be a qualified voter of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

To be appointed, you must be:

  • Committed to the electoral process.
  • File an oath with General Registrar’s office.
  • Available to serve the entire time the polls are open on election day.
  • Willing to commit to extensive training.

Note: You will serve as an unaffiliated Election Officer unless you are approved by the local political party chair to represent the party on Election Day at the polling place.

Duties

  • Setting up and closing the polls
  • Demonstrating voting equipment
  • Issuing ballots to voters
  • Overseeing election procedures to ensure a fair and impartial election
  • Assisting in certifying the number of votes cast at the precinct

Training

  • Election Officers are required to complete online training provided by the Virginia Department of Elections and attend in-person training (approximately a 2-hour session) before each election to receive the most up-to-date information available to assist them in their duties at the polls.
  • Training sessions are held two weeks before each election.

Hours

  • The polls are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • All Election Officers must report to the polls at 5 a.m. and remain until results are reported to the Staunton City Electoral Board after the polls close at 7 p.m. on Election Day.

Compensation 

  • Compensation as an Election Officer of the City of Staunton ranges from $150 to $200 per election depending on the position.
