Accessibility Policy
The City of Staunton recognizes the importance of making its digital government services available to the largest possible audience and has attempted to design the our website to be accessible by everyone. This website was coded to comply with both the Americans With Disabilities Act and conformance level AA of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0. Users who wish to view these specifications can do so at: Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0.
Along with conformance level AA compliance, efforts have been made to ensure compatibility with common technologies utilized by the adaptive community. This site has been tested for compliance with screen magnification software, screen-reading software, and text-only browsers.
The City will continue to test future releases of this site and remains committed to maintaining its compliance and serving the widest possible audience for Staunton’s digital government services.
To help ensure usability and accessibility, the City of Staunton has adopted website development standards and implemented accessibility validation tools. City websites are required to be built within the guidelines of these standards.

Recite Me Web Accessibility and Language Toolbar
In an ongoing effort to make the City of Staunton website accessible to as many people as possible, the site now provides Recite Me assistive technology.
This enables our visitors to customize their website experience and to view and use it in a way that works best for them. You can use it to:
- Read website text aloud (including PDFs)
- Download the text as an MP3 file to play it where and when it suits you
- Change font sizes and colors
- Customize background-color
- Translate text into more than 100 different languages
How to access the Recite Me toolbar?
Open the Recite Me language and accessibility toolbar by clicking on the red accessibility button on the bottom left corner of the page. This button now appears on every page of the site.
After you click the red button, the Recite Me toolbar opens and displays a range of different options for customizing the way the website looks, and ways you can interact with the content.
How to use the Recite Me toolbar
Play Audio
Back: Rewind to the previous paragraph of text
Play: Click the Play button to read text aloud
Forward: Skip forward to the next paragraph of text
Text Options
Decrease: This will decrease text size
Font: Change the font that displays on the page
Increase: This will increase text size
Color: Change the background, text, and link colors
Ruler: Click to enable the reading ruler
Screen Mask: Creates a letterbox for focused viewing of a section of the page
Margins: Change the text dimensions by narrowing the width of the text column
Text Mode: Remove images, videos, and design
Download Audio: Highlight the text then click the button to download text as an audio file
Dictionary: Highlight and click on this to view the definition of a word
Translation: Translate text into different language
Magnifier: Click and drag the magnifying glass to zoom x2 on a section of the site
Settings: Adjust your Recite Me toolbar settings
Reset: Restore the default settings
