Councilman Curren was born and raised in Chicago and has been a resident of Staunton since 2007. He and his wife, Lindsay, have two daughters, Anwyn and Chloe.

Councilman Curren chairs the Food Policy Council, serves on the Ag-Forestal Advisory Committee, the Tourism Advisory Board, and the Virginia Municipal League’s Environmental Committee.
Co-founder of Transition Staunton Augusta; publisher of TransitionVoice.com; and instructor at Blue Ridge Community College and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UVA.
Past civic engagement includes serving as the founding board member of Staunton Creative Community Fund; co-founder of Staunton Green 2020; founder of the Arts and Culture Council of Staunton; board member of Staunton Downtown Development Association; board member of Virginians for the Arts; board member of Sierra Club Shenandoah Group; and visiting instructor in the Czech Republic and India.
Councilman Curren believes in a strong local economy, community resilience, local food and food freedom,
energy efficiency and clean energy, sustainable economic opportunity and social equity. He is the author of the non-fiction books Buddha's Not Smiling (2006) and The Solar Leap (2016).
