The Staunton City Council wishes to provide recognition to its residents, businesses, and organizations, as well as recognition to particular days, weeks, and months of the year. The following forms of recognition may be requested by individuals and entities:

Commemorative Letter

Prepared on the Mayor's letterhead, a commemorative letter is affixed with the City seal and mailed to the recipient for birthdays, retirements, congratulations, etc. 

Certificate of Recognition

A certificate of recognition for significant individual or organizational achievements and/or milestones. Mailed to an individual or organization in a flat envelope. 

Proclamation

Proclamations can be presented by the Mayor, or designee, to an organization at an event or function in recognition of local, state or national achievement, or to commemorate an event, such as Small Business Saturday. In observance of a certain day, week or month, such as: Juneteenth, Arbor Day, Veterans Day, etc., a proclamation will be presented by the Mayor at a City Council meeting. This type of proclamation is also presented to non-profit organizations with national, statewide or local observances in connection with a significant milestone, such as: Pride Month/Shenandoah LGBTQ Center, September Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, etc. 

Guidelines

  • Requests must be made no fewer than 45 days in advance of event or date proclamation is needed.
  • Proclamations must affect a group of people or organization. Requests to honor an individual will not be issued.
  • Proclamations should not take sides in matters of political controversy; nor should they address personal or individual convictions.
  • Every request must gain official and unanimous approval from City Council before being issued. 
  • The Clerk of Council's office reserves the right to modify or deny any proclamation request.
