Staunton continues to use the city manager form of government it pioneered in the early 20th century. Day-to-day operations are handled by the city manager, and the city council establishes laws and sets the tax levels.

Staunton’s current and 17th city manager is Leslie M. Beauregard, who was appointed by the city council in October 2022.
